What is online roulette?

Online roulette is the digital version of the well-known roulette wheel found in physical casinos. It’s a game of chance that has been played for decades. The current form has existed for over 200 years, since 1796.

A European roulette wheel has 37 slots, numbered from 0 to 36. In American roulette, an extra slot (00) is added, bringing the total to 38 slots. The slots alternate between red and black colors. Next to the wheel is a betting layout where you can place your bets. You can bet on a specific number, on a color, on even or odd numbers, low or high numbers, dozens, and lines. Depending on the type of online roulette, additional betting options may be available.

In online roulette, you first choose your bet. Then you click start, the wheel begins to spin, and a ball is thrown into the wheel in the opposite direction. Eventually, the ball stops rolling and lands in one of the slots. Depending on your bet, you’ve either won or lost.

Different types of online roulette

Since the game has been around for so long, it has gone through several changes throughout history. Different regions around the world have come up with their own versions, which is why there are now 3 different types of (online) roulette.

European roulette

European roulette is the most commonly played online roulette game in Belgium. The wheel contains 37 numbers, with 18 red, 18 black, and one green zero. The chance of winning when betting on a number is therefore 1 in 37. The online casino has a 2.7% house edge: the ball lands on the green zero and no player wins.

French roulette

French roulette is similar to European roulette but has 2 extra rules: La Partage and En Prison. These provide extra protection if the ball lands on zero and reduce the house edge to 1.35%. With La Partage, you get half of your bet back. With En Prison, your bet is temporarily locked. If you win in the next round, you get your bet back. If you lose in the next round, you lose your locked bet.

American roulette

American roulette has a different wheel than European and French roulette. This (online) roulette game has a wheel with 38 slots, with an extra slot for the double zero. This results in an increased house edge of 5.26%.

The best roulette strategies to win

Many people play online roulette purely based on feeling and intuition. But the chances of actually making a lot of profit this way are quite small. However, there are some roulette strategies you can apply to win money with online roulette.

Martingale strategy

Those who apply this strategy in online roulette double their bet after each loss. After a win, you return to the base bet. The goal of this strategy is to recover losses. Keep in mind that most casinos have a maximum bet, so you cannot apply this strategy endlessly if you keep losing.

Reverse Martingale strategy or Paroli strategy

This strategy does the exact opposite of the Martingale strategy. You double your bet after a win instead of after a loss. And in case of a loss, you keep your bet until you win, then double it. The goal of this online roulette strategy is to make a lot of profit in a short time. Be careful to stop doubling in time if you’re happy with the profit.

d'Alembert strategy

The d'Alembert strategy is a variation of the Martingale strategy, but a bit less aggressive. Instead of doubling your bet, you increase your bet by 1x your original bet when you lose. After a win, you decrease your bet by 1x your original bet. For example: you start with €2 and lose, you increase your bet to €4 and lose again, you increase your bet to €6 and win, then you reduce your bet back to €4, and so on.

Labouchère strategy

The Labouchère strategy in online roulette works based on pre-determined goals. You decide in advance how much profit you want to make and only stop when you have reached that amount. The target amount determines your bet. You work with a sequence of consecutive numbers, starting at 1, which together add up to your target amount.

For example: you want to win €15. You then create the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The sum of these numbers is 15. Your first bet is the sum of the two outer numbers in the sequence. In this case: 1 + 5 = €6. If you win, you move inward in the sequence, so here 2 + 4 = €6, and so on. If you lose a round, you must add an extra number to the sequence and start over from the top of the sequence. You can continue to play with the number you are at on the bottom of the sequence. For example, if you lose the second round, you continue with 2 + 6 = €8. Eventually, you will reach the final bet. When you win it, you have achieved your target amount.

Tarso strategy

The Tarso system in online roulette is a cautious strategy focused on small, steady wins that eventually accumulate into a nice amount. Like the Martingale and d'Alembert strategies, you increase your bet after a loss. But instead of using your bet as a base, you work with chips. After a loss, you increase by 1 chip each time, and after a win, you decrease by 1 chip. This allows you to achieve steady small wins and lowers the risk of large losses when increasing your bet too quickly.

Fibonacci strategy

This roulette strategy is based on the famous mathematical Fibonacci sequence. This sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the previous two, and it starts like this: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, … Those who follow this strategy in online roulette increase their bet to the next number in the sequence after a loss. After a win, you go back two numbers.
