How do you play blackjack?
Since blackjack, unlike most casino games, is a game where strategy plays a major role, it's important to have a good understanding of the rules.
You play (online) blackjack with one or more decks of cards. Each card has a specific value. An ace counts as either 1 or 11 points, depending on what works best based on the other cards in your hand. Jack, queen, and king are each worth 10 points. All other cards simply retain their face value.
The goal? Beat the dealer. You do this by collecting cards with a total value higher than the dealer’s, without going over 21. If you have 21 right after the deal (an ace and a face card), that’s blackjack — and you win 1.5 times your bet. Got more than 21? That’s a bust, and you lose your bet. Less than 21? Then you need to have more points than the dealer to win. The dealer can bust too — and if that happens, all players at the table (or in the online blackjack game) win the round.
How does a blackjack game work?
Before the game starts, you place your bet. Once you and any other players have set your bets, the dealer begins dealing. Each player receives 2 cards face-up on the table, which together form a certain value. The dealer also receives 2 cards, but one of them remains hidden. Then, every player who doesn't have blackjack gets to make a decision. You have three options:
Hit (draw): You draw one or more additional cards until you're satisfied with the value or until you go bust (exceed 21).
Stand: You’re happy with your cards and don’t request any more.
Double down: You increase your original bet and request one additional card.
Depending on the cards dealt, you may have additional options to play in (online) blackjack:
Split: If you’ve received a pair, you can choose to split it into 2 hands, which doubles your bet.
Insurance: If the dealer’s face-up card is an ace, you can take insurance for half of your original bet. This insurance protects you against the dealer getting a blackjack. If the dealer has a blackjack, you lose your bet but get paid 2:1 on your insurance, essentially breaking even: no win, no loss.
Even money: If you have a blackjack and the dealer has an ace showing, there’s a chance the dealer also has a blackjack. To avoid winning nothing, you can choose to be paid 1x your bet immediately instead of 1.5x. This way, you’re guaranteed that win and can’t lose if the dealer has a blackjack.
Once every player has taken their turn, the dealer reveals their second card. If the total value is less than 16, the dealer is required to draw cards until they reach 17 or more. If the value is 17 or more, the dealer must stand.
Once everyone, including the dealer, has played, the points are compared. In addition to the "bust", where you automatically lose, there are 4 other scenarios at the end of the game.
You get 21 points or a blackjack immediately with the first two cards: you automatically win 1.5 times your bet.
You have more points than the dealer: you win 1x your bet (per hand if you’ve split), or 2x your bet if you’ve doubled down.
You have the same number of points as the dealer: in case of a tie ("push"), you get your bet back. So, you neither win nor lose anything.
You have fewer points than the dealer: you lose your bet.

3. When to double down?

The dealer’s face-up card is between 2 and 9 🡪 you double down if you have 10 or 11 points.
4. When to split?
Double 4, 5, and 10 🡪 never split.
Double 8 and ace 🡪 always split.
Double 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9 🡪 split once if the dealer’s face-up card is between 2 and 6.
5. When to take insurance?
Never. Not even if you have 19 or 20 points.
